I was very sad to hear that John passed away. In my mind, he was a "gentle giant" -- kind and supportive. And he was very intelligent. One incident has stuck in my mind all these years. We were playing in a pee wee football game. He was one of the biggest kids, and I was one of the smallest. On one play I was thrown into him by accident. It felt like running into a brick wall. I doubt he felt a thing. He said "nice block Billy." I suspect he knew the collision was unintentional but wanted me to feel good about it. That was the kind of guy John was. He will be missed.
