Richard Evon was one of my closest friends in High School, and was a remarkable human being in many respects. He was among the most intelligent people I've ever met, growing up in a family that valued education and lifelong commitment to learning. Even more impressive to me was Richard's selflessness and devotion to his friends. He steadfastly resisted any attention to his own achievements and would (usually with humor) deflect compliments whenever possible and regardless of how well-deserved they were. No one ever heard Richard complain, even when life was not treating him kindly. He was probably the most purely kind-hearted person I've known. I was able to resume my friendship with Richard for a couple of years after I had finished college and Richard returned from service in Viet Nam, the nature of which he avoided discussing. Richard was a journalist by education and became a newspaper editor in St. Petersburg at one time, but I lost contact with him and didn't know much more about what had become of him until a few years ago when I was contacted by his sister, Missy. Suffice it to say that, while Richard did not always make decisions that best served his own interests, his humor, kindness and humility continued despite the misfortunes he experienced. His death due to throat cancer was badly timed, occurring just when he was re-emerging from a difficult period.
If you knew Richard as your friend, you could never forget him. I miss him and will always value having been able to call him a friend. Godspeed, old pal.
Richard's parent passed away in 2018...within one day of each other. The siblings, ROb, Missy and Terrill all live in Virginia. His cousin, Sonny Nicolosi, lives in Charleston, SC.
