Sarah Phillips (1968)
Debbie and I were the best of friends. She brought me out of my shell. She showed me who I was by sharing herself with me. She was generous of spirit, always cheerful, optimistic. Nothing ever got her down. She lived her life that way. We had lost touch over the years, but several years ago, I got a call. It was Debbie. She was still the same soul and spirit. She told me that she had been having a bit of trouble with her health, but that was about 1% of our conversation. It was like it was simply not important, not part of her life. Once again, I lost touch because of issues in my life. I wish I had just one more conversation with her. She was truly a bright sun on this earth. My BFF forever.Pam Mercer (Payne) (1967)
As her sister, I am probably very prejudiced when it comes to talking about Debbie. No one had a sister like her, a mother like her, or a daughter like her. She was strong, so very strong - as the disease that took away her life invaded her body and took more and more of her mobility away, she fought it for several years until the last bout. The one that coming off intubation made her say her life had been great, her children wonderful and her contributions bountiful and she never wanted to do that again. I have never met any one more brave or more beautiful. I miss you every day and I love you more than anything.
