Well, I'm OLD, so I will go with you.You should know obviously.

Doesn't really matter to me what it was.Just know it was a slow song( cuddle up )..was just trying to jog the old memory.Must not have worked real well,or had a mis-fire.

The dances were still fun no matter what

Very nice site.Hope the people use this more than they have classmates.

Ha,ha, hold up.  The ROTC dances were from the early 60's music.  Dusty Springfield, Paul and Paula, The Angels.  Slow dancing with the disco ball turning (Only then it wasn't a disco ball.  It was a ballroom globe.) on a darkened dancefloor.  It was the early 60's.  The Music Casters opened with The Who, Rolling Stones, The Dave Clark Five and Motown. The Music Casters was definately moving toward the British invasion and the new sounds coming out of the country.  After they enlarged the Music Casters they started to bring in groups.  Originally the Music Casters was more like a ice cream shoppe.  Then when it became so popular as a dance club they expanded by knocking down a wall.  I saw Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels there.  Can anyone else remember seeing any other groups there?

Music Casters opened long after the Bazaar International opened. The store that occupied that spot was called Putnam Pantry. It was an ice cream parlor. You would get your ice cream and them proceed down a buffet of toppings.

The Lake Park dances were held in the upstairs room of the town hall. The room was called the Mirror Ball Room.

Yes Susan, I remember the Putnam Pantry and the toppings.   They kept the ice cream after the Music Casters opened up at least for awhile didn't they?  As for ROTC, I think I remember "End of the World" also.  But I don't remember Bill Smedburg.  Post an old picture Bill.

You are correct. That song was play as the last dance the entire time I went there. My sister and I were talking about it a few months ago. She didn't know I had the song so I sent her an MP3 copy. Last dance was always special.

I think you are right.  I think they changed it to "The End Of The World" later because that is what I remember and I am much younger than you guys!  Ha.

Class of 1963

I went to the Lake Park Mirror Ballroom dances just about every Saturday night for 3 years from the summer of 1960 till 1963 and I honestly thought the very last dance each week was...........Good Night My Love..........seems to me I remember "my love, goodnight" as the last words and then WHAM.............lights on and out the door pronto.  Bob Root and his dad did not let us hang around very long.  Also, Mr. Root did not let us dance too close on the slow dances!

I remember the last song was "Good Night My Love" also.     I was a member from 63-66 or there abouts .This has been discussed before on the classmates.com and the same controversy was mentioned there too. I think they are both correct, the early days it was the first song and got changed later on to "Good Night My Love" , when I do not remember.   At the 2006 Buzz  the band announced the last song at the Lake Park dances was "Good Night My Love" and performed it for the Last song of the night.

I hope this helps?   If not I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Bill, I don't remember anyone until I see an old picture of them, so don't take it personally.  I am lucky to remember what day it is sometimes. I am still trying to remember who I went to the 67 prom with.  I know I had a great time.  But I do enjoy the site and remembering way back when we were kids.  As for what was the last song at the ROTC, let's keep the controversy going.  It's fun and it sparks the memories.  I remember "Good Night My Love" also at the end of the night.

Absolutely! I was always at the Lake Park dances on Saturday night in the mirror Ballroom. I went to Music Casters sometimes. I figured that wreck would be there forever and then I came back to visit and found it was gone.

Sad?  Yes, but not more so than "End of the World".  After 1965, the dances perhaps used a different last song.  During my time of involvement, it was "It's Almost Tomorrow".

This is more how I remember the song being sung:

This is the Dreamweavers version:

I lived across the street from the Mirror Ballroom but did miss many of the dances over the years.  There were attempts to startt a theatre group in the mid 60s and take over the Ballroom but it never really went anywhere.

It's Almost Tomorrow" was written by Gene Adkinson and lyrics by Wade Buff of "The Dream Weavers" in 1953. They recorded it in 1956.

Snooky Lanson recorded it in 1955, but it was the The Dreamweavers' Version Bob played every night at the Lake Park dances.

But wasn't the last dance of the night always "The End Of The World" by Skeeter Davis?

As for some of the bands that played at the Music Casters over one summer....Sam the Sham and The Pharohs, Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels, The Young Rascals, The Nightcrawlers, <Little Black Egg> Neil Diamond, The Birdwatchers, plus a host of other "one hit wonders". It was a great venue, and Mr. Mall did his best to bring in both the best in local bands, as well as whoever had a hit song going. For locals bands, he had The Monopoly, The Bram Beaus, The Saxons, and of course, The Villagers as the house band. I'm sure I missed naming some of the local bands, but hey...it was over 40 years ago, so give me a break....lol... Anyway, there was a book published in the late 80's called "Garage Bands of South Florida". The author, whose name escapes me, did a pretty good job covering bands from the Palm Beaches to Miami.

That would be Jeff Lemlich. He published a book about the Florida Garage Bands of the 60's. There is a forum he set up at http://www.limestonerecords.com where you can post messages and pictures.

I started attending in the fall of 1963 and kept going until faded into obscurity due to the opening of Music Casters,  circa 1965.  My recollection is that it was always It's Almost Tomorrow. Lyrics notwithstanding, it's still one of the most beautiful, haunting songs of all time, in my modest estimation.
