Name the Year and Event
Posted Sunday, May 24, 2009 10:29 AM

I am almost 60 now and frankly this site has brought back memories.  The problem is, I can't remember alot, particularly dates.  So this thread is dedicated to trying to place the time and event.  I will start:

The cruise on the intercoastal.  It was I think 1967 and it was after prom?  Anyone remember any details?

Class of 1968

It was 1967 after the prom.  It was on the Paddlewheel Queen, WPB to Fort Lauderdale and back, about mid-night until dawn.

Does anyone remember the bonfire across from the front of the school?  What year was it and I believe it was for homecoming.

It was huge and what a bonfire!  Was that the only one we had at Riviera Beach?

In a bit of irony (not unusual for me) I had just clicked on your thread when the Doors Light My Fire was the next tune on my iTunes player.. I always listen to my late 60s song list when posting on either Classmates or here.. it helps bring back the memories.. now I'm listening to HP Lovecraft who were a west coast band (got no airplay on the east coast).

Anywho, yes the Homecoming game bonfire was across the street from the school in that huge greefield over nearer to Ave H away from the area where we parked our cars.. and, Bill was right, it was 1967, since it was for our Senior year.. at least the one I remember the most.. the thing took a week to build and was about 40 feet high. I lived near the school so I saw the thing as we all did, go up.. and I went to the bonfire, if not the game, which I may have I can't quite recall. But I think I remember who the Homecoming Queen was.. Bonnie Mitchell who rode innto the stadium in a T-Bird convertible, if I recall correctly.

As far as eariler bonfires, I can't recall any.. maybe for the Class of 67 tho we had better check with someone from that class.. as for the Class of 1969, I also don't recall.. if it was over Thanksgiving weekend I'm not sure I saw it.. otherwise I was talking a night Drawing course a couple nights a week at PBJC and may have might have missed that one.

Yep, '67, and it was a huge pyre of wood. I kept thinking my god they're not gonna let us burn that huge pile.. the RBFD would've had to be there, and of course, they were. And yes, the fire was huge, you could see it for a couple miles. This was right or not long after some racial tensions in the Riviera black community that summer, where someone started a fire so, anyone not knowing we were having a Homecoming bonfire may have thought the worst.

So, who won the game? And, yes, you're 60.. I'm two years younger (g), but you're in better physical shape than most of us - you're out there playing baseball! Playing drums!

"then play music in the gym after the game"

What was the name of your band? Did they have a light show?

I remember one homecoming dance that was not held in the gym.  It was at a private club that had a dance floor and a stage.  It might have been 66.  Of course we did have a band.  Anyone remember any details?

Actually we won the game.We were pretty good at our Home coming games. We weren't much to speak ofthe rest of the time. Not for lack of trying.

The name of the group was the "Clicks" that I was in.We played all over the place, even went to New York at one point to play the Pepermint Lounge.AHHHHHHHHHHH if we could have only gone on to bigger and better things.I still think I have a picture some where of the Band.If I stumble across it I will post.

Bonnie Mitchell was the Queen and I believe she road in a 56 T-Bird Covertable,Aqua in color as I recall.Like i said,I'm OLD so who knows. This site does tend to bring out some memories that I'm sure we all thought we forgot. The site is GREAT theropy..................................LOL

Thanks for the compliment regards shape.I have to be to continue sports, and the music is a great stress realiver, and fun.As long as the Lord gives me the strenght I will continue.Besides I only6 look old from the outside. It's what is inside that counts.

Sorry I missed every one at the Buzz, but work was calling.

I remember Happy Stevens, who was one year behind me (69) drove a 64 Porsche.  He used to park it across the street from the school and at least the girls thought he was so cool.

I went to Riviera Beach High the last year they still had a 7th Grade there, before they opened Howell L. Watkins Junior High in Palm Beach Gardens and Riviera became just a high school with grades 10 - 12.  Back then they had bonfires too.  As I recall it was an annual event.  It seemed the fires kept getting bigger and bigger to try and out do the last years class.  I think it eventually became an issue of safety and liability like everything else that was fun and the practice was finally discontinued.  I know we had a huge fire in 1967, thought later fires could have been even bigger, but I didn't go to any after my graduation.

For the full story of the Paddle Wheel Queen cruise after prom party, go to the topic "High School Stories"  The quick answer is 1967.

There were bonfires for a number of years. In 1964 we played Jupiter for homecoming, some of there people came down and burned our bonfire a few days ahead of time.  All the people who had gathered wood originally had to scramble to get more together for our celebration! They also took Diesel fuel or something and killed the grass with JHS inscribed in a number of spots on our football field. Needless to say we kicked there ass that game and it felt real good! We had bonfires every year as far as I remember through 1964, the last one in my class of 65.
