VHS came later.  Umatic (3/4") was first introduced by Sony several years before Betamax as a home video format.  The VR-1600 had a tuner to be able to record off the air.

In one of my graduate school classes at Yale we were supposed to come prepared to discuss a new technology that would make a difference in the future.  One of two technologies talked aboutI was the aboility to record off the air and also view movies at home.  I had seen my uncle's Umatic machines two years before and his work at Presentation House, which he helped create in LA for Columbia Pictures / Screen Gems to test audience reactions to film, TV, commercials, etc.

It was 1973 when we had the discussion in class.

Betamax was late to the party - 1975.
