Coach Knowles
Posted Monday, May 3, 2010 01:58 PM

My son is a teacher at Dwyer High School. Last week, Wed. April 28, 2010, they hosted the county track meet. My husband went to watch. He came home laughing. He said I would never guess who coached track at Dwyer. Lincoln Knowles! I asked my son about him. He said yes he did coach track and how did I know him? I pulled out my old yearbook and showed him. I told him that Coach Knowles taught me how to drive in 1965. His comment was he knew Coach was old but had no idea he was that old! I'm not sure if I've been insulted or not?

I remember being down at Palm Beach High School to play in a Junior Varsity football game and waiting to go out on the field.  The room we were in had picutres of PBHS athletes from the past.  Prominent was Lincoln Knowles' picture on the wall clearing a hurdle.  Didn't he hold some kind of record for track back then?

One day during Phys Ed he had a cold.   He kept saying that the only way to get rid of it was to run it out - get out on the track and run until you were exhausted.

I heard many years ago that he held records at the the Unversity of Florida in the hurdles. When I was in the seventh grade he was trying to teach us how to run hurdles in PE class, he put a penny on top of the low hurdle and knocked it off without moving the hurdle. Joe Genchi

With my class Coah Knowles put a dime (inflation from 65) on edge on the hurdle and could knock it off with his heel every time.  Coach held the State Record for High Hurdles for over 40 years!

My youngest daughter teaches calculus at Jupiter HS. One day last year she came home and asked if I knew a Lincoln Knowles.

I was shocked, he was substituting for a math teacher.

Coach Knowles was at the Horrnet Buzz last year, and it's amazing how many of his students from our era he remembered.  Had no idea he was still teaching, though.

I mostly remember Coach Knowles for the time that he was trying to teach a group of us young guys how to run hurdles during the 8th or 9th grade (back in 1960 +/-).  He placed a quarter on the top edge of 5 or 6 hurdle bars, then got back about 20 yards, and proceeded to roll through the hurdles at top speed, clipping off each quarter with the underside cuff of his gym shorts, and never touching any of the bars. We all stood around watching in amazement. Small wonder that he was a great college track man (at a great college).

Other than that, he is always remembered as a really great man with incredible integrity...and an awesome role-model... as a teacher, coach, and father.

Here's a great shot of him from the 1957 UF yearbook, The Seminole.

Great Picture.  I told my brother Chuck (57 PBHS) about the event tonight honoring Coach knowles.  Chuck called and told me they were going to have him speak.  I hope it went well.
