The Beaches
Posted Tuesday, April 13, 2010 05:22 PM

I think we all hung out at the beaches.  There were so many and with all of them different memories.  My favorite was Juno beach.  Then it was pretty much unspoiled.  There was absolutely nothing on the beach that ran along A1A.  There was one sole small house that sat up on a small sand hill further inland.  I loved Juno beach because it was so isolated and quiet then.

Yeah, Sarah, the beaches...what memories! I lived at Juno beach in a motel for two years, then at the Rutledge on Singer Island for a year. Both had GREAT beaches. And there was a spot at jupiter that had some trees on a bluff overlooking the ocean. That was awesome!

The public beach at Riviera Beach was so HOT to walk on to get to the water. What a pain that was. I only did it barefoot once and learned that lesson.

I remember Apple boarding on the beach because I couldn't afford a surfboard.

My future wife/exwife lived next door to Mr Neyhart, the history teacher. He had a boat and one weekend we all went out the inlet to do some fishing offshore. The weather picked up and we cancelled that. We came back thru the inlet and anchored off Peanut Island. I did somefree-diving there and it was great, the water was crystal clear.

I love beaches and so does my wife, Candy. She lived up the coast from us and had an apartment across A1A from the ocean. New Smerna Beach.

We have since gone to San Diego twice, and rented a beachouse for a week. It was one of the best vacations we ever had.

I went to the Singer Island Public Beach alot, but it was often crowded, and yeah, ha, the sand was hot.  Singer Island was kinda cool then.  I am sure it is nothing like it was then.

I just looked on Google Earth and it really hasn't changed that much. There are two large dunes with vegetation halfway between the start of the beach area and the water. Still looks VERY white and HOT!

The dunes and vegetation are off limits as I recall.  When I'm visiting my father in Lake Park, I go to a county park beach that is located on the reefs where the Amaryllis grounded.

I think they are going to build some big high rise development that will restrict access to the public beach on Singer Island.  That's supposed to be the widest beach in Florida and the closest beach to the Gulf Stream.

The public beach on Singer Island is the beach part of Riviera Beach just to the south making up the southern tip of Singer Island is Palm Beach Shores, a different town.

Hobe Sound was another beach I particularly liked.  Then it was a preserve.  One would park along side of the road and make their way through a pine grove, then through sea grape covered vines to emerge out upon a natural beach.  It was absolutely amazing.  I am sure it must be gone now to Tiger Woods mansions and such.  What a shame.

Tom, I burned the bottom of my feet too at Singer Island beach.  Barefoot people hopping up the sand to the showers.  Haha.  Can't forget that.

In the early 60's up in Juno Beach just North of where A1A splits off from US-1, there was a narrow dirt trail which led up to the ocean. Since it was right next to the very secluded Seminole County Club, the area was quite private. Many times hours would go by, and you wouldn't see a soul. Anyway it was a beautiful setting for beach dates. Unfortunately condos eventually took over the area by 1967, and ruined the pristine location. I'm glad I still have the memory of this place though.

I too, remember a beach between Juno and Juno Beach. Since you mentioned the Seminole Country Club, I'm sure that's the beach I have such fond memories of. And not just because of the turtles laying thier eggs there ......

Morgan Waters and I used to sneak into the Seminole community on the beach just south and east of the Seminole course.  You could drive in past the golf course or take a boat into little lake worth.  It was secluded and was a great place to take a date.

Was on the beach just south of the Jupiter inlet on a blanket in the dark after the Jupiter High School Prom.  Suddenly, there was  a flashlight blinding me.  I tried to run but tripped over something around my ankles.  The girl I was with wrapped herself up in the blanket.  It was a Sheriff's Deputy holding the flashlight.  He was very apologetic about disturbing us.  Said he saw a fire down the beach and thought we were turtle poachers. He must have apologized 15 times or so.  I was most embare assed

Went snorkeling on the N Head beach yesterday.  It's a park now.  Will go back today.  Yesterday was too rough and the tide was low.  Lots of sand was sitred up and saw nothig of interest.  Cruised up 703 to Juno.

Just down visiting my father and brothers.

It's a county park called Ocean Reef Park.  So many people there yesterday they had to close it.  Just made it in.  Wasout for just over an hour at noon.  A little too much sun but had a great time.  Interesting when the best looking girl on the beach had me wondering what they would look like, lost her top for a moment.  She was a real stunner.

We were at the beach on Singer Island every weekend.  Nancy and Linda Timmons parents would drop us off and my parents would pick us up.  I remember the food shack there had the BEST hamburgers.  Anyone remember the street dance there?  Man, did I blister my feet on that one!  And then as we got older and in High School we had the Bonfires on the Beach.  No one ever bothered us.  We would ride the 4 wheelers on the beach, you could bring your dogs to the beach.  When I was 18 (and had a fake ID) we would sit on the patio at the bar on the corner with a nice cold beer.   (I'm sure those weekends were the cause of the Melanoma I had removed last year)  Haven't been back there for 30 years.  But I am told Singer Island (which used to be THE place live)  has turned into a real dump.  Hard to believe.   Those were the days my friend...............

Does anyone remember the Army/Navy (?) beach further down along Singer Island?  I think it was a make out beach.  Ya, I know none of us were supposed to be there.

That would be "AIR FORCE BEACH". It is now called MacArthur State Park, and Nature Preserve.

That is great Jonathan.  I am a big preserve nut.  I would also frequent the Hobe Sound Preserve.  does anyone know if the Hobe Sound Preserve beach is still there?  I would imagine it is now very expensive homes.  Jonathan, how big is MacArthur State park?  Is is a natural preserve?

The Hobe Sound preserve is still there. They have a lot of big homes on the West side of the road on the inland waterway (Tiger Woods & Greg Norman built there) On the ocean side just before the preserve there's a few beach bungalow places that are not that great.

MacArthur State Park is 325 acres. I would call it a natural preserve, but they have boardwalks to go from the ocean side to the lakeside. http://www.macarthurbeach.org.
